wonder what it means

Post by videojim »

I asked the question what output does the D90 Nikon camera have in video. The answer was AVI, with jpg compression. What exactly does that mean, in terms of signal? I shot some video with the camera, had Ken Smithers convert it to an AVI, and my Renomee won't read the disc. His 4100 read the signal, and he output it thru Disk transfer. Why can't a Renomee read the disc? Ideas?

Disk transfer can generate two types of AVI files, Type 1 and Type 2. Casablancas like type 1. From the manual:
• Type 1
The AVI files on the DVD that you are going to burn will contain video and audio combined. Although this format is more space saving compared to Type 2 (approx. 5 % more video footage fits on a DVD), only a few programs are capable of playing and processing “Type 1” on a PC. Therefore, “Type 1” should primarily be used when you want to archive scenes for later use on the Casablanca.

Jim:

Did you say the 'MAGIC WORDS'?

Actually, I was wondering if you 'WAITED FOR THE DISC TO READ'....................?

What is happening when you put the DISC TRANSFER DISC into your unit, then you go to NEW/SPECIAL (depending on which OS you have) and click on

DISC TRANSFER. Then you click 'DISPLAY CONTENTS' .........what 'then what happens'?

You should get one of two pop ups: 'NO DISC' or 'THE HOUR GLASS' reading the DISC.

If you get the 'NO DISC' wait a good 30 seconds and click on DISPLAY CONTENT again...........and it might just need the time to READ THE DISC.

Depending on how much info is on the DISC, the longer it will take............

Try,

Actually, you are interpreting that the opposite of what it means Craig.

The Cassies will read AVI's created in Both Type 1 and Type 2.

It is the PC world that has compatibility problems with Type 1.

Never heard of "AVI with JPG compression". I wonder if he was meaning he used Arabesk instead of Disk Transfer, which converts the AVI file to MPEG2?

You still should have been able to read it though as long as it wasn't simply a bad burn with either Disk Transfer or Arabesk I would think.

AVI files can be wrapper files. For instance, the NEW BOGART 4 will be able to export directly from the scene bin now as an AVI file for uploading to YOU TUBE, VIMEO etc. w/o the usual 12 min. file breaks. However, the AVI file is a wrapper file and contains .mp4 as the codec. I am going to assume the D90 is producing a VIDEO file as an AVI which could contain another codec-MOV-maybe?

I will check later with my D80.

Perhaps Ken converted the file(s) to M-JPEG instead of MPEG-2? M-JPEG is interlaced video or Moving Jpeg. An older style format. This could be wrapped in a AVI 2 file and COULD work in BOGART but doubful in the RENOMEE. See if you can have the files converted to MPEG-2 and then rewrapped as AVI-2. Use disc transfer.

Okay, I started Disk Transfer, and placed the disk in the tray. FIVE times in a row, when "display contents" was clicked on, the editor showed its red box, saying an unrecoverable error had occurred, and the system needed to restart.

I doubt it's being caused by the specific Disk Transfer DVD, so it sounds like you have a corruption of the OS which would require a full, destructive install to fix.

Sometimes it's as simple as power cycling the machine or trying this in a different Project, but normally it's an OS corruption issue.
