PIP Studio

I am trying to use PIP Studio and it is telling me to please insert the PIP Studio operator in the story board first. Can any one tellme what this operator is and how to insert it? Thanks Bob....

Hey Bob,

I gave the answer to your question in the other place that you asked it. But here it is again.

The "Operator" is the symbol for PIP Studio and it must be placed in-between the two scenes in the storyboard. If you are in the transition window.......Just hit the "ADD" button and the symbol pops up in-between and allows the work to begin.....otherwise nothing will ever happen when you try to start working in PIP Studio, or any effect to be added in the storyboard. It's like the Key in the ignition when you want to start the car. Without it......it won't go anywhere.

It has always been this way if you want to do something in the storyboard. Doing it in the storyboard rather than in the scene bin with "Special" allows you to start the rendering and let it work by itself. Working in the storyboard allows you to batch render hundreds of transitions and other effects rather than having to do them one at a time as you must do in the scene bin.

To add to Jim’s explanation, if this is your first time with PIP Studio I would recommend the following.

As Jim says, PIP Studio is a transition effect, i.e. it can only be performed in story board. The main scene is added to the story board, followed by the PIP scene and the effect has to be added (“Add”) between the two scenes first and then “Launch PIP-Studio”.

To make life a little easier for a first attempt, I would suggest you have a main scene the same duration as the PIP scene.

For example if you have a 40sec scene and you want to add a PIP scene which starts 10secs into the main scene and runs for 10secs, then first split your main scene into 3 sections, 10secs, 10secs and 20secs. Place the first scene in the story board, followed by the second split and then add the PIP scene (which will also be 10secs duration) and finally add the last 20sec scene.

With the second scene in the centre of the story board, go to transition , click “Add” with the PIP operator selected, which will place the effect between the second and PIP scene. There are one or two transition programs that you need to “Add” before you can access the program, PIP being one of them.

You don’t have to split the main scene, the PIP can be ranged within the main scene, but it is far easier for the first time, when both the scene and the PIP are equal length.

I love this program, the possibilities are endless, with animated PIP’s and a whole host of effects, but I would just stick to the simple processes to begin with.

I am with you Ian I am loving it too. Thanks to you guys, I have it going on now. I just need to play and learn to control it the way I want. I got scenes floating thru but I need to find how to slow them a little. They buzz across the screen too fast. I'd also like to learn how to start one as the last one was going off, but that'll come in tme. I have to go shoot the racing tonight so I'll play later. Thanks to all who advised me. Bob....

The PIP speed is primarily controlled by the duration of the transition effect which is mostly dependent on the Scene/Transition duration.

Also, you simply make a Scene of the first one and use that as a layer for the second one.

Timing the second and succeeding ones either through the internal controls or by physically Splitting the Scene into sections at the points you want the next to start and end, etc.

Well I thought I was on my way but I've run into a snag. What I am trying to do is to run different scenes thru a base scene and it just isn't working to way I want it to. The first scene seems a little fast but I can live with that. I tried splitting my base scene into 5 second scenes ans I Inserted the operator between the 1st 5 sec base scene and the the scene I wanted to float thru the first base scene. That seems to work although itys a little fast but it goes to the scene that floated thru but full screen. I put another 5 sec split of the base scene after the first floater scene I feel I am on the brink her but I am mising something.
I really want to do something like Joel did on the opening of his dance promo on the sample video post. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bob....

The speed of your PIP moving depends upon the length of your scenes.

1. Lets say you have what you call your base scene and it is 1min long. You want your first PIP scene to move in/out over a 6sec period, then split your base scene 6secs and the remainder will be 54 sec.

2. Place the first split in the story board, followed by the PIP scene, which should also be 6secs and after selecting “Transitions” and adding the “PIP Studio” effect, change the effect time to the full 6secs by clicking the duration bar (the left box immedately under the story board) and carry out the movement you require. Note:- If you do not change the duration, it defaults to 1sec and the PIP will take just 1sec to complete it's travel.

3. Lets say you now want the second PIP to take 8secs, immediately following the end of the first, then go to your 54sec of remaining base scene and split off a further 8secs and repeat step 2, with an 8sec PIP scene. etc.

Obviously if you know where you want all the PIP’s to be in your base scene, you can split the whole thing first and then carry out each PIP transition in turn.

Yes Ian I think I can work with that. I am sorry to be so long to get back but I have been extremely busy. I haven't been on here since last week. I had to deliver the piece I wanted to use it on. I settled for Making a scene of the pic's I wanted to use on the PIP. I have 5 more video's to do for her so Maybe by the time I get to the last one I'll be proficient with PIP. Ha! Thats a joke! My learning curve is very steep. Thanks for ya'll trying to help. I'l keep muttleing thru it.
