Re: hd on the rene+
Yeah, on further thought the exception was you can burn an AVCHD DVD even with a normal DVD burner in a gen3 machine.
That you did not need a Blu-ray burner in a gen3 machine for this (you do to burn to Blu-ray).
So gen2/Smart Edit machines cannot burn HD in any way, just export a finished Project via tape (after a reeeeeeeeeeal slow finalizing).

My mom always told me that happiness was the key to life.
At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.
I told them they didn’t understand life.

Re: hd on the rene+
Thank you for your answers. I realize speed is much better on the bogarts and due to budget constraints, I cannot move up to them. While I know that AVCHD and HDV are different formats and please excuse my lack of hd terminology, but if I have a customer that wants a project shot in HD and the final edit dumped onto dvd. Will they be getting HD quality on the dvd or will it be SD quality, but slightly better because it was shot with an HD camera, but not burned to BR? From reading your comments, there seems to be 3 forms of dvds that can be made for the consumer, BR, HD and SD. Until now, I was not aware that someone could watch an HD quality dvd that was not BR.
Am I on the right track?

Re: hd on the rene+
Jeff,
Well, from a nomenclature basis, DVD is an optical disc storage medium format and Blu-ray is another optical disc storage medium format.
So strictly or correctly speaking you shouldn't refer to a Blu-ray as a type of DVD, even though the round discs look the same.
That would be like referring to a CD as another type of DVD just because they also look the same.
A DVD can have SD or HD burned to it if you have the right equipment and software.
If you burn HD onto a DVD though I am pretty sure it will not be playable on a DVD player, only on a Blu-ray player.
I have never actually tried to watch an AVCHD (HD) burned DVD on a DVD player as I replaced all my DVD players with Blu-ray players long before actually ever burning an AVCHD DVD.
So while I am not absolutely positive I am pretty darn sure in theory that an AVCHD DVD will not play on a DVD player.
Why would a client ask for it to be shot in HD if they are requesting DVD finished product?
No, if you create a SD DVD it will not be HD quality.
Will it be of a higher quality than one shot in SD?
Perhaps.
I believe HD to SD gives a wider dynamic range, but ultimately there are too many variables more important than the HD/SD issue when talking about an ultimately SD delivery product.
For instance, the light versus gain (and therefore grain) capability of the camera would represent a more tangibly visible superiority or inferiority in the end SD DVD results than simply whether it's shot in HD or SD and there are other factors as well.
And that doesn't even get into aesthetics of 16:9 HD versus 4:3 SD.

I really like your response! Educational!
While I understand your question regarding why someone would want hd footage and delivered in sd. To be honest, I work with several videographers from Maryland to NC, 24 to be exact. All but 2 say they deliver all their HD footage on Sd dvds. Don't know if this is the norm or just a freak circumstance. They do say that the hd footage delivered on an sd dvd is better quality then footage shot on an sd camera.
These are folks shooting weddings, recitals and corporate video. Having it in 16x9 is a plus shooting in HD.
My impression is that there is a lot of talking about how great HD looks, as it does, but really no demand for it delivered in HD, unless you are shooting for tv or a high end client.
Curious to hear other cassie member experiences?
I know a lot of the cassie users still shoot in sd. Myself, just switched to HD this week.

Re: hd on the rene+
Oh, I understand the economics, shooting in HD and delivering in SD is common because most customers won't pay extra for an HD edit/delivery, but most of them don't ask for it to be shot in HD either which was why I questioned why the client had asked for it to be shot in HD, but delivered in SD.
I think shooting in HD and downconverting to SD might possibly give a real small improvement, but not enough to move to HD simply for that.
I personally moved to HD like five years ago to get 16:9 proportions with good resolution, rather than specifically for the HD.

My work flow is to shoot HD, either 720P or 1920 x 1080i (not HDV) and let the camera down convert (real time) by firewire (SD) into my Solitaire. Edit and deliver as a 16x9 (wide screen) SD DVD. For under $40.00 the client can get a DVD player that upconverts to HD for playback on a HD TV. Is it true HD....NO....does it look very good....YES.

On my I-Pod today.
Keep in mind that AVCHD, which is what Arabesk uses, will only produce a 27 min. On a reg. DVD. The more motion, less time.
Blu-ray(blue laser) will burn a Blu-ray disc up to that discs G limit.

Ron has a JVC HD camera. Pro-model. One of the only non-Tape camera, along with the SONYEX-1 that exports via FireWire. Most flash media cameras use USB.
