external Hard drive
Just bought a WD 1 gig External hard drive. Any Idea how it should be connected to the 4000? If so is one usb port better than another?

Yeah, they saw you coming if you got a 1 gig hard drive. LOL
Any of the USB plugs should work fine, Bill.

Re: external Hard drive
Now that you have an external HD, you might want to look into the "Store-N-Share" software. It works great and allows you to use as many HDs as you want. Also with it you can build DVD materials from several different HDs and have them all on one DVD even though the various clips were stored on different HDs. A very useful piece of software to have with the Bogart system.
With S-N-S if you put all your projects on different HDs and have just your operating system on the internal drive, then if you have a
failure of the main drive you haven't really lost anything. Just put a new one in internally and add all the software again. All your projects are then on external drives and can be backed up individually to other drives as well.
I now have 5 drives externally and no projects at all on the internal drive.

A word of caution. We have had "issues" with some models of WD and other brand USB drives with pre-installed back up software which can trigger "confusion" in an "S" machine. This software might reside in a seperate partition which makes it difficult to remove. We would recommend buying a software free drive e.g. Seagate Expansions.

Another caution. When I first had an extra HD I used the front usb socket, it never worked properly. I use a hub on a rear socket with no problems having 3 HD's connected. I use the front one now for a mouse.

Re: external Hard drive
With S-N-S you can save back to the internal drive from your external one. I made a terrible mistake the first time that I tried it. I thought the software would save from the internal to the external......but it didn't. The way that I had it set, It copied the external back to the internal and erased everything on the internal drive. This was a total mess for me as I lost some really important video that absolutely could not be saved or shot again.
This is one reason why I don't have any projects on my internal drive....only the OS and the add on programs. That way there is no problem saving something back onto the internal drive if there is an emergency on one of the externals, because the internal drive is empty and ready to save somethng.
There shouldn't be any problem with factory software on a newly purchased Hard Drive. The first thing the instructions tell you is to initialize or erase the hard drive.
There is a button right there on the screen to perform this task. So a new drive with factory installed software from WD or any other brand will be erased before you actually do any editing with it. I certainly can see that having Western Digital's software on the drive would be a conflict with Bogart and our machines.

Re: external Hard drive
The WD (MyBook) not only had/has non Bogart back-up software installed on it but it's also set into a reserved and invisible partition
"If" you have one of these you can remove the partition only by using a little program available (for free) from the WD web site - a 'normal' re-format is not sufficient to remove it.
Also, for now anyway, avoid any 3Tb units . . .
