H.264 to Customer via Renommee Plus

Post by BobFoster »

I have a customer that I have been recording their annual 2 1/2 day seminars for about 10 years. This year they have requested that I deliver the edited program material to them in MPEG 4 H.264. The program is recorded live with 2 cameras and a VGA input to a Roland switcher that converts the VGA signals to video.
It's recorded direct to Renommee Plus in Std definition in 4:3 format. You may remember the last time I needed to supply data to a customer's hard drive that I was just recording 3 1/2 minute 8 mm films into my S4000 Pro running 4.1c and was nothing but trouble trying to record SD via S-Video inputs. The S 4000 would stop recording momentarily, and the video was full of green pixels that emitted beeps. I'm sorry, I'm not going to risk 2 1/2 days of recording using that machine. (I have no problems recording high def video directly to it) I am thinking of doing my standard recording procedure on the Renommee Plus and then transferring to H.264 using this converter to do the transfer from the Reno. http://www.blackmagic-design.com/produc ... orecorder/
Does anyone have any experience with this unit or have suggestions on getting the material from my Reno to MPEG 4 H.264 without using many hours to make the transfer??? Also, is MPEG 4 H.264 even possible with 4:3 SD video data??? Thanks.

Using your Z-5 with MRC1k attachment: Shoot on the CF card in HD. In BOGART 4 there is a new option ("OPT") that allow transferring/exporting scenes to a flash drive. Even though it is an AVI wrapper, it is MPeg-4.
Before doing your project, give them an AVI sample and see if that works. This is my personal thoughts.

Lou
Where is this opt button you speak of, that you can transfer/export to a flash drive? I wonder, how many people know about this, or am I the only one living in a cave and don't know about it.

Hi Ronald,

in Editing Window lower right you find the "opt" button, beside the clipboard button.
The button exists since release of Bogart 4.0.

Thanks Lou, That would be a good check on furnishing MPEG 4. I won't be able to use that procedure on the 1.5 hour long, 3 source edited programs. I have some time before the program will be recorded. I'm just trying to find a way to get it done efficiently. I'm going to try recording directly to the S4000 Pro, but I don't have much faith that option will work. Even trying to record a half dozen 3 min film strips is filled with unresolvable problems. Maybe if I converted the analog video to DV using my Canopus converter it might ingest the SD material better. I have placed an order for the Blackmagic H.264 Pro hardware converter and will try going from the Reno+ to an external hard drive from my Macbook Pro and deliver the hard drive to the customer who can then upload from the hard drive. H.264 SD should only require an inexpensive small hard drive to contain the 20 plus hours of edited program material. The program isn't until March 2012, but they are already requesting information getting the job done and cost. Last year they got a serious lesson on converting 20 hours of DVDs to H.264 because they didn't request the service until the program was already finished and delivered in DVD format. Thanks again Lou.
