External Backup Tip

Post by TimKennelly »

With the last couple of Operating Systems those units with firewire ports have had the option of doing Storyboard Backups.

There are two methods for this: DV and DV Backup.

For those not clear on the difference Hans-Joachim has graciously taken the time to create both a document and picture diagram of the differences as well as an important audio tip involved in the process to keep your audio, stereo when Restoring the backup.

I think it is a worthwhile explanation and am hosting it on my website for your access.

Here is the schematic as a document:

Thanks Hans.
My mom always told me that happiness was the key to life.
At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.
I told them they didn’t understand life.

Tim,
many thanks for putting up my document to your website for downloading.
I hope this will clear up what you get when restoring from the 2 modes of storyboard Backup.

For Projects I am still working on I use both methods of backup so if something catastrophic occurs I can use the DV Backup to Restore most the stuff in it's component form for maximum continued tweaking ability and the DV so I can grab the Inserts and additional audio tracks using Split to Insert and Add if desired and use that Restore as a template for exact frame orientation to put the pieces back together.

I have had to use it this way once and it worked far better than starting over or having to work from a totally "cemented" Storyboard.

I don't really mind the unrendered thing, both the Solitaire and S4P make that a minor issue, but I do wish they would find a way that it kept the Inserts and additional audio tracks.
