Overmodulated Audio

In a recent video interview the audio seem to have been overmodulated. When I transfered the clip to my Prestige (SE 9.1) the audio is almost incomprehensible. Is there anything I can do during or after the transfer to correct/improve the quality of the audio? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I have noticed the same with the new Bogart software. I load all files with the audio reduced to -10 and it seems to work.

Was the original audio recorded at too high a level - Is the audio over-modulated when you play it back in the camera itself?

In both my Avio and Kron+ (Generation II editors like the Prestige) I load footage via firewire at -5 db. This usually keeps the audio mostly in the blue with just an occasional little bit going into the yellow. I believe the audio level gets raised somewhere when you export the footage so it keeps things in the "safe" zone.

Yes, it was recordrd with the volume on the camera set too high and it's overmadulated when I play it back on the camera too. I am bringing it in via fire wire. I am wandering if there is anything else I can do to correct it, similiar to the programs we have to correct bad video? Than You, Ilan

There are some programs available on the PC platform and the Mac may have some tools that deal with over-modulation in Final Cut Pro, but if you don't already own them you'd have to go out and buy them and then learn to use them. I have no idea on what the learning curve would be. And of course we don't know if it can be fixed. If you know or can find someone that works in audio forensics, you might ask them if they can help you. You can do an internet search on Fix audio over-modulation. I would not expect too much.

Thank you Craig. I was hoping for a solution within my system just like fixing a bad video clip, I guess audio is more complicated then brightening or sharpening a video scene. I appreciate your thoughts. Ilan

Over modulated audio is similar to over exposed video. Not much can be done with it. Underexposed video can be brightened and low levels of audio can be boosted. there are a number of free audio processing software on the internet but don't expect much improvement.

Something is wrong with the new Bogart software. Music that I have used for wedding background comes in over modulated. I tried a music cd from the store and that is also overmodulated. I am able to lower the sound bar to -10 to get some of the music to play right.
