S4000 Monitor Choices

Hopefully, I'll be buying one of the new systems in September.

Anyway, in planning, I was wondering about whether my current dual monitor set-up would work okay with the new system.

I'm using a 19 inch PC monitor and an old 27 inch TV to edit. I was using a 15 inch LCD but it was not giving me the right aspect, especially when framing titles. Therefore, I've swapped it out with an old tube TV with good results.

The TV is good for having clients watch the product in the editing room (which I do not encourage, but you know how it is).

Will I have to upgrade to an HD monitor? My thought is that I could stay with the current set-up and watch HD playback in letterbox. I know it would not be HD playback, but would it work?

Also, do the new systems ship with the Bogart editing software? Does that software enable compression in Quicktime and Flash? We're doing everything on the net in Flash, but Quicktime is good too for a lot of stuff.

Hello John - yes, you could continue to use your current monitor set-up. If you are shooting either 16:9 or HDV (which is also 16:9) you would likely enjoy the true ability to natively monitor those formats on a true widescreen monitor (whether it is HD or SD). There remains the options in the new S4000/PRO models to monitor via video (4:3 or 16:9, as well as dual monitor with video & VGA or by using the DVI port (includes DVI>HDMI cable) you can monitor the true HD signal 1920x1080.

Also, do the new systems ship with the Bogart editing software? Does that software enable compression in Quicktime and Flash? We're doing everything on the net in Flash, but Quicktime is good too for a lot of stuff.

Yes, the new S-4000/PRO models ship with the new Bogart SE Operating System. This however does not yet include the expansive import/export functions previously announced. We are expecting those additional benefits/capabilities in a software update in the new weeks (I am showing this beta version of the new OS this next week at the WEVA Expo 2008 in Orlando, FL). The currently shipping models include the ability to import SD, HDV and AVCHD (MTS) via analog, firewire and USB (AVCHD). Flash has been discussed/requested but as of yet is not a native option in the system.

That's good to hear about the monitor situation, because I'd like to hold off on spending the money for another monitor (maybe first quarter next year).

I wouldn't be purchasing the new system until September at the earliest. So, maybe you guys will have the new compression options then. Will there be a way of confirming that the software contains that option before purchasing?

The YouTube site shows various compression options coming via Bogart (I think) and the ability to connect to the Internet to upload. I take it that the new system doesn't even connect to the web yet. If it does, does it have a web browser? I think I remember something about that on one of your YouTube videos.

Finally, when trading in the AVIO, will you guys move an existing project over to the new system along with the software? I will back it up, of course, but I have one project that I'd like to keep on the system for as long as possible because changes are on-going (never ending, you know).

Yes, we will continue to announce the advancements and benefits available on the S-4000 series products. That will be both here on the Forum as well as on our customer website.

It does not yet - that is part of the new fully featured Bogart SE OS -- but to be accurate, the means to connect to the Internet does not allow you to upload or download directly. This is done to prevent the possibility of introducing a virus or malware into your video work. You _will_ be able , however, to connect to another PC or PCs via local area network and export your projects to that unit for uploading. The internet function will allow you to do computing 'in the cloud' as it is called, using browser applications (like browser email, or the productivity applications like the Google suite).

Finally, when trading in the AVIO, will you guys move an existing project over to the new system along with the software? I will back it up, of course, but I have one project that I'd like to keep on the system for as long as possible because changes are on-going (never ending, you know).

We do not transfer any project data - your best option is to back-up your project in process - either via HDD or tape and import back into your new unit upon arrival. We do make allowances in certain circumstances to allow you to keep your existing unit for a few days to transfer active projects into your new unit prior to shipping back to us.
