Title turns wide scene into 3:4 scene

I am shooting SD video in 16x9 format. Every thing looks good until I split the scene into segments and add a title as a lower thirds ID for the speaker.
When I check the subtitle in "full" view, perfect. When the scene is "creating" Perfect. When I play the created scene, the wide screen scene has been converted to a vertical stretched 3x4 scene. There are black pillars on both sides of the stretched scene. The scene is already stretched to 3x4 when I open the "enter/edit text" screen. Any solutions or suggestions for keeping the scene 16x9??
