Gymnos Video Capture Problem
We have a Gymnos editor in our university library. It was working fine before. But after being moved recently, a user can no longer upload video to the Gymnos. I connect the camera to the Firewire, go to the project Record mode. The connection is not recognized. I've tried two different cameras and two different firewires. The Gymnos was not dropped or damaged in any way. I have tried everything I can think to do...reconnect everything...check capacity...nothing.
Project already on the system can be viewed fine, no problem. But I'm stuck with not being able to start any new projects because the Gymnos doesn't recognized the Firewire connection to the camera.
Do I need to reinstall the operating system? Anyone heard of this before? Thanks.

Hello Patrick,
Please contact our Tech Support team at (303) 801-1010. Be prepared to leave a message with your serial #, active operating system and a contact telephone number.
From the symptoms you describe it is possible that your firewire connectivity has been compromised - this can be a result of someone 'hot-swapping' a DV/Firewire device. But I will leave the final diagnosis to an export with our Support Team.
Regards,
Chet

Hi Chet--thanks for the response (great job with the instructional DVDs too!). Sounds real bad for our Gymnos. Is this fatal? Or can it be repaired (if that's what the problem is)? I did place a call early today to the support desk and left my unit's serial number, etc.

Re: Gymnos Video Capture Problem
Patrick,
If that is your problem it is not "fatal" and is fixable, but the most expensive repair MSUS has.
Your description of connecting and going to Record does not mentioned Powering up in between.
Have you been connecting the cam to the Gymnos with both already powered up?
If so, you have probably fried the DV board as Chet alluded to with that "compromise" language.
You absolutely should NOT connect OR disconnect a firewire connection with both ends powered.
You can get away with it similarly to crossing a street without looking both ways, but only for so often with similar results, a crash.

My mom always told me that happiness was the key to life.
At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.

Patrick,
Try another firewire cable. One of the Avio editors in our school system was having the same problems. I replaced the firewire cable and now all is well. You have probably tried that, but if not it is worth a try. Good luck.

Re: Gymnos Video Capture Problem
I've tried different firewires and no go. I'll try a third different one day but not too optimistic that will work. What is involved in getting a repair? Can someone come to my school and fix it? Or do I need to ship to Colorado?

If the dv board is fried it needs to ship to Boulder Patrick as this requires an actual board replacement.

Re: Gymnos Video Capture Problem
Thanks for the latest response. We'll check into shipping it to Boulder for repairs. I know Casablanca has a trade up program. We're interested in the newest more expensive Casablanca model (Chet!).
Might we be able to work something out?

Patrick,
Please contact our Tech Support Team at (303) 801-1010. They will help you determine what the likely cause is and whether the unit needs to be shipped back to our Boulder, CO offices for repair/s.
And, yes - I would be happy to work with you on a trade-in that would give your students and staff access to the increased performance and efficiency of the new S-4000 product line.
I have sent you an email to follow-up on this issue.
