My associate recording partner who records about 40% of our seminars has been recording to a Sony DVCAM tape recorder. I use the same model Sony to transfer the tape to my Karat. We are exploring the possibility of him recording to a DTE (direct to edit) hard drive for me to up load to my Karat. Can any one recommend from experience a workable DTE setup? The most efficient set up would be a HDMI compatible DTE and import from that. Any workable combinations would be welcome.
Thanks

You didn't mention which camera(s) you shoot with, but you may want to take a look at the products that this company sells.

Re: DIRECT TO EDIT hard drive and format w/Karat
We both use 2 cameras (not the same) and a VGA feed of power point into a Roland V4EX switcher. The output of the switcher is HDMI. The HDMI output signal is split and 1 side is connected to a Livestream broadcast unit for live broadcast to the Internet. The other side is down converted to S-video and recorded to DVCAM tape by my associate. He wants to record direct to a DTE hard drive instead of recording to DVCAM. HDMI from the switcher to the Atmos unit is probably not an option for several reasons. 1st the format probably won't load into my Karat. 2nd we require the capacity to hold up to 7 hours of recording time at once.
I use the same setup, except I convert the HDMI output to FireWire and record directly to my Karat. Thanks for responding.

You may be able to find an SD card video recorder with an s-video input and various outputs that handles DVCAM.
Another option may be to use an A/D converter and record into a laptop that has a firewire card, then transfer the video via firewire to your Karat. I think this would work but I'm not sure. Here's an example of an A/D converter some Cassie users have in their studios:

I use an Atlona HDMI to S-video and the ADVC 'S 110 big brother, the ADVC500 to get the HDMI signal from the switcher into my Karat. The purpose for the the ADVC 500 is to provide "locked audio" into the Karat to avoid audio drift.

I believe that the 110 also locks the audio after reading some posts on the Cassie Tips List a while back. You could post a question to the CTL asking if it does what you need.
