What on earth is an MP4?

Post by johnneumann »

Please excuse the naive question. For all the trim-and-render quickee editing that I do, I never get around video terminology or any of the advanced stuff that our machines can do.

I've downloaded some 80mb to 200mb MP4 seminar clips off the internet. I dropped them into Toast Titanium to try to burn them to DVD. It's doing the conversion of MP4 to DVD format and will (supposedly) do the DVD burn, but at the rate it's going, a 200mb file will take over two days to convert! (And another three minutes besides to burn!)

Is there anything my Kron running OS6 can do to make life easier for me? I just upgraded from OS4, so I have no idea what 6 does. (Heck, I never had any real idea what 4 did. Like I said, I'm just a trim and render kind of guy.)

I'd love to hear about how I can firewire the file over from my computer and the Kron will handily convert it and burn it to a watchable DVD.

Any such luck? :)

Don't know what's taking so long, but I do know that the MPeg4 is the compressed signal corresponding to High Def video. My cam turns out MP4 for Hi def, and MP2 for standard def, if that's any help.

Thank you for responding, Jim. I appreciate the insight.

It sounds from what you say like my Kron running SE6 should be able to do something with this file. I have an ancient computer (made in 2001 - 400mHz) and that accounts for the slow speed. I'll have to see for myself if I can get the file into the Kron and get it onto a DVD from there.

If anyone's done this - or knows it can't be done - I'd love to hear from you.

There are many types of MP4 compressions. Some are very compressed and require a lot of horsepower.

Thanks, Lou. That probably explains my two day encoding wait time.
