Should not.
I suggest trying varying the power up sequence.
Power both down, wait a full minute, power up the drive, power up the Ren and try checking it again.
If that doesn't get it, do it again reversing the order of power up.
Tell me you have not connected and/or disconnected the firewire between the drive and Ren while both are powered up.
Tell me you have connected a cam via firewire (with at least one powered down while making the connection) and that the Ren can control it, input or export footage.
