How to get started in the video world?

Hello,
I'm a teenager i got started out a year or two ago at school doing live broadcasts and making short videos. Three of which won state wide competitions this year. i have a Casablanca classic and wanted to know what would be a good way to start making some money? any job ideas , filming ideas are encouraged

When I was 17 and got my first camera, I used to shoot weddings and local bands/shows to make a few quid. I also hooked up with a local wedding photographer/videographer to get some work experience (not always paid) but it did help set me up in terms of making contacts and learning how to handle different types of jobs. That was 20 years ago and nowadays I shoot television productions for the BBC where I've worked for nearly ten years, it all goes back to those heady days doing weddings and gigs though...

Are weddings a good way to start out? And what all did you film for the bands?

Weddings are combat work if you charge a lot, so don't. If you have a wedding video made up, that's your portfolio, if not, then do one for free. The all-software disc from MacroSystems has a good wedding video on it. After you have one down, then go online and get listed with wedding service sites. Some cost more than others to list. Getting business online is a good way to start in that. Actually, your award winning videos are your stuff for now. So, show those around. If possible find videographer listings in your town, and try to get on with them for a bit. Apprenticing is one good way to get a hang of it.
