Control Image problem

I lightened a scene on my solitaire plus 120% brightness in Control Image. The new scene created by this has a frame in it (here and there) that are frames from the video, but not in the scene I tried to lighten. Hmmmm. Brand new hard drive with SE 8.1 , film was new for this shoot, Camera (VX 2100) was just cleaned professionally less than 1 month ago. I was using smart render in the background. It happended more than once so I tried to redo the clip without smart rendering turned on and so far it has been o.k. Any ideas? I can work around this problem, but just wondered why it was doing this..

Hey Pauline,

This is the old random frame problem of extraneous images showing up where they don't belong. It can be video or audio finding it's way in the wrong places. We used to have this all the time in the early operating systems. This is why Tim and I have been trying to convince folks to shut down on an empty project when they are finished editing.

The memory buffers still have frames left in them that haven't been cleared out. Switching to a different project and or switching in and out of record mode usually clears the buffers, but sometimes there are a few frames left in there that will mysteriously show up in places they shouldn't be.

People laugh at us for sticking to this idea of shutting down on an empty project but it still makes sense to me. If the memory is indeed cleared out, there won't be any images sneeking in to your other footage where they shouldn't be. MSUS says there is no need to do this....so this idea has become an "Urban Legend" Many loyal users swear by it and others laugh at it.

You said that you had a new hard drive, new tape, great camcorder, the only thing left is that the memory buffers have not been cleared and there are stray frames of other scenes finding their way into your FX rendering situation.

I had the same problem with my Reno+ and SE 8.0. The only fix was to delete the scenes including the original scene before splitting and re-load the footage and split to the same scenes. Is this HD footage or SD footage you are working with? In my case it was HD. The "rogue" frames popping up made editing in HD impractical.

Thanks for the input on my problem. Jim, I try to shut down in an empty project and I do most of the time, but sometimes I have a "whoops". I have read the forum religiously and believe what you say about the memory buffers. Makes sense to me. Thanks to both of you for coming to my aide. The footage was SD.
