Solitaire just shuts down while rendering help
recently loaded OS 8.1 but this problem occured with previous OS's. When using effects like blurry effects that take a bit of time to render, my solitaire just shuts down and turns off. This happens about 10 to 20% into the rendering process. Now its crashing with less complicated effects like DP slow motion etc.. I did a complete reinstall when I installed OS 8.1. I have weddings to Edit and this is a major let down and extremely frustrating.

Re: Solitaire just shuts down while rendering help
I don't know that I would call DP slow motion a less complicated render demand, but it sounds like a heat related issue.
Try operating with the sled you are not using out and/or add a small fan pointed at the unit and see if that stops the shut downs.

Re: Solitaire just shuts down while rendering help
I have my A/C on and a small fan blowing air on the back of the unit still crashes@ times. Temp says its about 75F around the machine. Tim, what sled is the primary one: the top or bottom one? I believe I only have 1 sled. If I remove the main(active with projects on it)) HD sled with the machine off will I lose any projects? I have never removed a sled on my solitaire before.

Another possibility is that the AC power to your editor is not constant. Several of us recommend using a UPS (uninterruptible power supply or battery back-up) with AVR (automatice voltage regulation)
In addition to protecting your system against power surges, it also protects against brown-out conditions that can cause instability.

Maybe Lou or Tim can comment on this one .... wasn't there an issue with the hard drive being past a certain % of being full? Something like keep the HD below 80% full?

Re: Solitaire just shuts down while rendering help
Ron,
The Solitaire does not have a "primary" drive, but rather two equal choices.
The top sled position is IDE 0 and the bottom sled position is IDE 1.
Removing sleds with the power off does not hurt anything or lose any data.
If you only have one drive it would most likely be in the IDE 0 top sled position, so you would remove the lower sled.
If you have a fan already blowing on it makes heat a less likely issue.
Still, if you have an internal fan dying (or dead) that could still be the problem or it could be the power supply going bad or something failing with the ram or motherboard.
Heat is the only one of those you can diagnose (by adding ventilation, etc) without either replacing parts or sending it in.
Any drive will operate better when not stressed and if you are operating your drive mostly full you are putting stress on it, but an 80% full drive should not be causing it to shut down.

Re: Solitaire just shuts down while rendering help
I took the empty bottom sled out have fan blowing rate in there and room is ice cold from A/C. I even deleted the filter pack and reinstalled it. I do have it plugged into a quality surge protector. My HD space is only about 38% full. To no avail still crashes. It just seems to be blurry spots effect and long color corrections that shut the macine off. The DP slow motion has not made the unit crash the last couple attempts. Never seems to crash when DP SM is set on fast but normal and above its hit or miss.

Re: Solitaire just shuts down while rendering help
I was just wondering, you say it shuts down while rendering in Arabesk.............are you sure all of your effects are rendered before going to Arabesk? One way to check would be to go to the FINISH WINDOW and look at the create button, but I have found that sometimes it is not completely rendered even if the CREATE button is greyed out. If a small portion of audio is not rendered it could be hitting a hold up there also.
I have gotten into a habit of making 'sections' then adding to the storyboard in a different project, so all of my rendering is done in one project (or sometimes more than one depending on the edit) and then when the 'final look' is done, take that to another project where I build the DVD chapters and then go to Arabesk. Adding Films from EACH project that I have made with completely rendered footage.
It seems to make the 'time frame' in Arabesk less and with less error.

Re: Solitaire just shuts down while rendering help
Not even taking about Arabesk issues, the issues I have are in in the basic edit function... I'm leaning towards failing internal parts like a mother board etc..which is disapointing when it comes to product quality with cassie systems,(had a bad Avio years back), especially bad now when I need to make the jump to a dedicated HD system ASAP....MS has good support behind it's systems and machines from my experience but I'm a little bit leary about investing into a S-4000 Pro now because of what I have read on this BB.

So you are not using a UPS that I described above?I do have it plugged into a quality surge protector.
