I ordered two Seagate Drives: Barracuda 7200.10 (160G|ST 7K 8M ATA100 ST3160815A) and installed both as "Master" until I needed them. They both worked as Master, accepted the OS and software, and one drive has been in use as such.
Here's the problem. Recently, I needed to install one of my new drives as "Slave" and the Kron would not recognize it. I had removed the jumper that it called for as Master (no jumper = slave). If I replace it to Master then it is recognized.
So, I can't get two of these drives to work together on my system because one must be the slave. I've Googled this and note that others have had problems with the slave setting but they are running PCs. I've even tried all possible jumper settings and the only one that works is master.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Paul

Re: Seagate Drive Problem
The jumper setting is correct however when you attach the drive (I presume that you are trying to use two as it's a Kron+) the Casablanca will have no idea of it's existence until you do a system update.
Being a Kron+ you may even have to do this twice, once for each drive, but if you start with IDE 1 you might find once is enough.
As a warning Kron+ units are quite happy to have two drives but if you then put them back to one they can, how can I put this politely, sulk.

Re: Seagate Drive Problem
Michael, thanks for your suggestion. You are correct that the Kron+ has two drives and is very finicky about how you swap out drives. Yes, I did try to use a SM OS card to get it going. However, as soon as I plug in the new drive as IDE 1 (slave), power on results in only the screen that read Kron+ - no hour glass - nothing. I can walk away and return but no change. I must force a power off by holding the power button for several seconds. It doesn't matter if I have a SM card inserted or not prior to power up. As soon as I unplug the new drive, my unit functions properly. It works fine with the old Hitachi drive. My friend has an identical Kron+ so I was able to check this out with his unit with exactly the same result. The Seagate drives (we have 4 between us) ONLY FUNCTION AS IDE 0 (MASTER). Unless I hear from someone, including tech support, that I'm doing something wrong, I must assume that these drives are just not fully compatible with our system. At least I can get it to work as IDE 0.
I'd be interested to know if anyone with a Kron+ knows where to purchase a drive that can operate in either IDE 0 or IDE 1 and is available NEW on the market today. That would be a good solution as I could purchase that drive to use as IDE 1 when needed. I'm also fortunate to have the Lacie backup external drive so I'm not in too bad shape at this time.

Re: Seagate Drive Problem
Now you've jogged something in my memory . . .
There is an issue like this that I've heard off but I thought it was another brand like Western Digital etc, sorry can't remember just now.
Have you not got another drive licking around (like an old 80Gb) to try the theory ?

Yes, you're right about Western Digital not working as I've tried those. I am running a Hitachi Deskstar without any problems but it's getting long in the tooth so I was hoping to buy a new drive for when I need it. Here's what I have:
Currently Installed and Running:
IDE 0: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (160gb) WILL ONLY WORK AS MASTER
IDE 1: Hitachi Deskstar (160 gb)
Drive in Storeage:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (160gb) WILL ONLY WORK AS MASTER
At this point I would just like to be able to get the Seagate to work for IDE 1 (Slave) or find another new drive that will.

Re: Seagate Drive Problem
I got a response to my querry from tech support as follows:
From our previous case histories, Seagate drives usually won't work as slaves in our systems. We've had a couple of rare cases where we have seen it work a time or two, but in most cases it will not. To run two drives in this Kron system, you will need to use a Seagate as Master, and another brand of drive as a Slave.
Looks like I'm in the market for another drive. Any thoughts on which will work?

I personally like Hitachi/IBM drives.
If you want to stay with a 160GB, http://www.provantage.com/hitachi-0a35389~7HTCD0LQ.htm $48.33 plus shipping.
Bump to a 320GB, http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe ... e=10007434 $63.99 plus shipping.
I have used both sources without problems.

My mom always told me that happiness was the key to life.
At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.
I told them they didn’t understand life.
