Blu-Ray Disc Stock

Post by DarrelCharest »

Before falling too far behind the technology curve, I'm leaping into HDV. I have the cameras and I'm about to buy the S4100. Now Blu-ray discs are on my list of must have items.

I was ready for the sticker-shock but not the price range of available discs. Understandably 50GB discs cost more than their 25GB cousins. And higher burn rates inflate costs even more. Even so price differences are huge.

For example Meritline offers Optical Quantum discs (243-036) in lots of 25 for $77.99 or $3.12 each. They also offer Philips Blu-ray discs in packs of 15 for $2.80 each. At the higher end of the spectrum TDK BD-R discs in pack osf 25 sell for $237.50 or $9.50 each. And I see similar spreads in other ads.

Keeping in mind the adage of "You get what your pay for" what is your advice on what to buy and what to avoid?

I bought 20 TDK Blu-rays (single layer) from a Japanese guy on Ebay for 50 Euro.
They work fine with the BDR-203 and with Arabesk 4.
Now the/his price jumped to 55 Euro + Shipping. But it still is a good price, I think.

Hi Volker,

Thank you for your quick reply.

With your prompting I checked eBay and found the item for $89 U.S. dollars.

I too think it is a good buy and plan to use these.

Thanks again,

Darrel

I purchased a 10 pack of VinPower Digital inkjet printable blu-ray disks from Newegg for $34.99 which got great reviews (although only 13 reviews is not much of a scientific track record), but I have not actually tried them yet with the current compatibility limitations of blu-ray with our system and period.
My mom always told me that happiness was the key to life.
At school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I said “happy" and they told me I didn’t understand the question.
I told them they didn’t understand life.

Thanks Tim,

Its nice to have several options for the Blu-ray discs. And with your referral, I've had good luck buying from New Egg in the past.

We sell LOTS of different brands of CD's and DVD's. i agree that Blu-ray discs are coming down in price just remember that they do not all follow the same strict QC and are NOT all created equal.
