Re: Canon 7D & 5D Mark II
That's great regarding the new Canon cams and the DSLR cams. My Sony EX1 is also approved for several broadcast applications. I am told that "Deadliest Catch" TV series uses the EX1. I know I am bragging on my great Sony EX1, I just really like the quality. The new Canon cameras are excellent too. It is quite amazing how the technology has changed and getting smaller and better. I have faith that MS will eventually come out with a Casablanca broadcast model with features like 50 mbs, 4:2:2: color, SDI I/O, and other features that broadcasters need and utilize.

Hey Joel there is nothing wrong with the EX-1 (its just a different look/style of shooting) it was used on the movie "District 9"
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php ... 590&ref=nf
Seth the more I use the 5d the more I like it... you cant go wrong investing in the "Glass" (thats the real expensive part of SLR's)
These lenses will fit future Canon SLR models... my belief is it will only get better & 4:2:2 is just around the corner with these cameras
Yes extras like support gear/follow focus can be expensive but once you have it your good to go for quite awhile.
Here is a list of the gear I use on a standard wedding shoot: (again if anyone is interested feel free to ask questions about the following)
Two 5d Mark II (yes I want one more soon !)
http://www.vistek.ca/store/DigitalSLRs/ ... -body.aspx
One 7d
http://www.vistek.ca/store/DigitalSLRs/ ... -body.aspx
Two Pro3X Zacuto Z-Finder: (a must to see the small viewfinder properly)
http://www.zacuto.com/z-finder-dslr-viewfinder
One Marshall V-LCD70XP-HDMI (my wife prefers this to the Z-finder)
http://www.lcdracks.com/monitors/v-lcd70p-hdmi.html
Canon Lenses: Two standard 50mm 1.4 (when 50mm is used with the 7d it acts as a 85mm with the cropped frame , L-series 35mm 1.4 (great for the reality show stuff in tight quarters), L-series 200mm 2.8 (fixed zoom for vows and speeches), L-series 70-200mm 2.8 (zoom lens for vows and speeches), L-series 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 (zoom lens great for outside weddings), EF-S 10-22mm 3.5-4.5 Wide Angle (used for hand held & steadicam shots). I will be needing more lenses like macro, 14mm & 24mm also a fish eye for different projects in the future.
http://www.vistek.ca/results/CameraLens ... enses.aspx
Audio: 3 Rode Microphones Video Mic Condenser Microphone Directional (plugged into the SLR's)
http://www.vistek.ca/store/ProVideoMicr ... ional.aspx
Separate digital audio: one Zoom H4n (for vows & speeches + all interviews etc)
http://www.vistek.ca/store/ProVideoMicr ... order.aspx
One Zacuto Double Barrel with follow focus (a must for nice floating camera on the go takes the jello shaking you get when hand held yes its expensive but VERY rugged "lifetime guarantee " )
http://store.zacuto.com/Double-Barrel.html
Also bring Glidetrack, http://www.glidetrack.com/
steadicam, tripods & monopod + lights is a must inside not everytime but most of the time...don't believe anyone that tells you don't need to bring extra lighting inside with HDSLR's.
Yes all this stuff is expensive but I now cater to a much higher market with the "film look" than before.
You can see us in action with the gear here:

Again hope someone from the community joins the revolution & I am available if you have any questions on here or through e-mail, phone, I-chat lol
Cheers,
Syl

Re: Canon 7D & 5D Mark II
Things to consider between the T2i & 7D
1. you get 1/8000th speed for photography whereas with the T2i you are limited to 1/4000th...I didn't think that would make a huge difference until I started taking action sports shots myself. While you want to do mainly video, I felt that I found myself also wanting to take some shots here and there.
2. the 7D has more ISO intervals for better light management in low-light conditions. While the T2i has the same ISO range (100-6400), the 7D allows you to go up in smaller increments such as 320 or 640 and so on whereas the T2i you jump (100, 200, 400, 800, etc.).
3. as for adjusting the frame rate and video size, they are identical and also for quality, they are identical as far as we could see. what i liked on the 7D was that you can control the color temperature more accurately than the T2i's presets (which the 7D also has)
4. in terms of shutter cycle, the T2i is limited at 100,000 whereas the 7D is at 150,000
What I really liked about the T2i was the weight, but on the other hand, the 7D is much more durable and weatherproofed, so if its raining, you are out of luck shooting on the T2i.
Anyway, hope that all helps.

Re: Canon 7D & 5D Mark II
Thanks for the post....very intuitive! I often hated it when shortly after I buy equipment, the manufacturer puts out a model that can almost rival your past purchase, featurewise, with much less money. The T2i surely is way inferior than the 7D or 5D, but is not a bad camera for entry level users (About $800 body). Now, with Nikon D7000's full time AF while shooting, I'm getting that feeling all over again, this time crossing brands. It's the nature of things, the manufacturers will compete endlessly designed to attract the consumers' pockets. The thing is to master the technique and capability of your equipment on hand, be it upgraded or antiquated, and if it seems like you've achieved the end result satisfactorily, let not every new toy that comes out be a telepathic spoiler to your creativity.
One advantage of Videographers over Photgraphers is that we're used to storytelling while most of them are just learning how to edit which we have been used to doing for decades. We compose, point and shoot while mainly concerned about lumens and audio. We can however learn from them as far as lighting, exposure, composition and the generic talent learned from the best cinematographers like Gregg Toland in Citizen Kane, how Gordon Willis emphasized his characters in the three Godfather films, or how John Alcott created that look of 18th century paintings in Barry Lyndon in one famous scene using natural light with only candles.
I just purchased a T2i for hobby puposes and still uneasy to bring it out in the filed. I am still using my trusty Z1. The only upgrade I have on it is a $200 on board HD recorder to supplement potential tape failure.

I really have to tell you Syl...You have a wonderful eye for this type of work! You and your staff really do a fantastic job! I think what is so unique about shooting with a full DSLR kit like you do is that when all of your gear is set up on location it gives the impression to the client of a "cinematic" feel. What i mean by that is...its not just another "video" camera on a tripod. When you show up...the rig that you use looks instantly different! Nothing cooler looking than a great big Matte Box and a Follow Focus. As always...Awesome Job!

Re: Canon 7D & 5D Mark II
Thank you so much Seth ! I love your positive attitude towards this medium... You are absolutely correct every time we show up for a shoot everything becomes a conversation piece because
it does look completely different than a normal camera. The Double Barrel Zacutto support/follow focus/matte box not only looks very cool but I am now using a 1.2ND filter in the box to keep my shutter at 60fps
or very close to it. As I shoot in 30p (the proper recipe) you should see the outside stuff look more and more "film like". I could not perform a proper floating camera look without using a FF as well.
Add the Glidetrack/DP Slider & people just stare then come over and want to know what the hell were doing lol
An on going joke between me & Frank from Photolux
http://www.phtoluxstudio.com
"Hey why are you shooting still photos with a video camera" "No I think you are not aware that you are shooting video with a still camera"
Its all in good fun ! Most photographers have NO IDEA how to shoot video... let alone do the editing
Because of this we video editors can jump on this technology and be light years ahead of photographers who want to crossover !
Dude have a great seminar in Dallas !!!
p.s still havn't experimented with Blu-ray so jury is still out !
