I didn't want to have to go to the board with this one, b/c the solution can't be that difficult, but it's eluding me and driving me batty...

I am simply trying to upload HD footage into an HD project w/ the S4000. After I go to the record screen and play footage on my cam, then click record on the mouse, no footage is seen on screen or recorded. SOMETIMES it WILL work, but after endless attempts. I had this difficulty several weeks ago and it seemed to work itself out.

I though th the issue may something to do with sequencing so I noted what worked the last time I had this issue: 1) Firewire to the cam 2) Cam on 3) S4000 on 4) Go to record screen in S4000 5) Play footage on cam Following this sequence enabled me to record footage onto the S4000 from the cam. But after trying this again 10 times for the past half hour, it doesn't work again. Is there a short in the firewire? This problem seems so ridiculous but I can't figure it out... anyone else have similar issues? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello Rte 80 west,

One of the simple things that most folks using Bogart are not aware of is that each project should be set for what type of format you will be working on in that project....before you add anything to it.

If you plan to add a standard defintition 4X3 video in project number three....it must be set for 4x3 standard Def first. If you want to do a High Def video in project number four...it must be set to HD
before you start to work in project number four.

If you will look at the project settings page, you will see that there are six different settings for the project format. ( Click the Format Button) They are listed as: 4x3, 16x9 anmorphic, 4x3 progressive,16x9 progressive, HD and HD progressive.

Once this setting is done, there is another step to accomplish before you are ready to begin loading in footage to your project. Look into the lower right hand corner of the Project Settings page. You will find a box called "MODE" . this is where you tell the Bogart that you will be working in either regular tape based HD in which case you will select "HDV" or you will be working in AVCHD memory card video in which case you will select "MTS".

Once these format settings have been put into the Bogart system for the project you will be working in ( and these settings match what you are about to load ) you will see that it will work properly for you.

If your projects are set for one type of format and you attempt to load something else......it just won't work. It's like using the wrong key in your front door.

You don't mention what OS version you are operating on.

Early versions had a communication handshake problem where they would not begin recording on the first attempt.

When you do this does the remote control of the transport work?

If so, being record and if the time code does not begin to roll use the remote transport control to Stop the tape, Rewind the Tape and then try Record again without turning anything off or ejecting the tape, etc.

It should successfully begin recording with the time code rolling.

As for the display, that has a delay in it before it comes on and again, in early OS versions it was horrible with just occasional freeze frames of the action.

All of this has improved with the current OS version although it still needs further improvement regarding skipped frames and the audio.

I am using OS version 2.3 e, the one that was released in August.

I never had issues with this w/ my Kron. You think the latest OS version will do the trick?

Change the Firewire cable.

I can get that locally, at say Radio Shack, right? Is there a specific type, model#?

You can get firewire cables at many stores from BestBuy to Walmart.

It depends on whether you are connecting to the front or the back.

The front uses a 4pin type and the rear a 6pin type.

Your cam is likely a 4pin.

So buy a 4pin to 4pin to connect to the front and a 4pin to 6pin to connect to the rear.

Yep, definetly the cable. Just experimented w/ some old DV footage and after manipulating the cable in certain positions, received a signal that came and went. So that has to be it. At least I have an answer now... kinda figured it might be the cable, should have tried it sooner, but it's tough to tell when loading HDV footage. DV footage gives a clearer indication.

You beat me to my next question... are there any advantages in transfer of material using a 6 pin over a 4 pin cable?

The six pin is a more secure connection and has less chance of the cable being pulled out on accident while using (and you don't want that to happen as that could short the firewire board).

Also, using the rear six pin leaves the front of the unit more aesthetically pleasing if you lean towards the minimalist look.
