Mixing 2 different films isn't working. Why?

Post by gorldon10 »

I'm learning my new S2000 (Bogart 2) and doing a practice project. I recorded my HD videocam film via firewire into project 1using the HD format. In project 2 I recorded a dvd film made by an HD videocam (not mine). Because the HD format only accepts firewire recording, Project 2 film was recorded in 16:9 anamophic, put in clipboard and transferred into Project 1 thru clipboard - where it immediately was converted to HD. Problem: when I burned a short Arabesk 4 dvd of the combined projects the film in Project I (HD) filled the whole 16:9 HD screen from my dvd player (set to 16:9) while the film from Project 2 (16:9 anamorphic converted to HD) does not fill the screen - it has 2 horizontal black bars, top and bottom. I've tried different ways of doing this with the same result. Any suggestions? Will Bogart 3 solve this problem? thanks!

light bulb went off!! The dvd player from which I recorded the supplemental film (#2 film) was set to 4:3. When I changed it to 16:9 then, of course, it was recorded to 16:9. Then I added it to my main project via clipboard, and burned into a dvd. When played on a dvd player set to 16:9 - YES!!! - both my HD cam film and the supplement film fill a 16:9 tv screen!! Hope this mess now cleared teaches other S2000 newbies how to navigate such. Problem now: should I continue with this process on a long travel project or wait for the soon-to-be-released Bogart3 ?? 3 is "supposed" to be easier to mix films like I'm doing. any suggestions? thanks

Gorldon, (not sure of your 'real' name)

Glad you came up with an answer to your dilemma! Bogart V3 will allow greater compatibility mixing video from various sources (different cameras & file types) but the issue of mixing varying aspect ratios (4:3 & 16:9) will not be cured automatically with Bogart V3. I am afraid that issue will be with us videographers for some time to come as we wrestle with how to best present content from a variety of sources, mixing legacy footage that is 4:3 with newer 16:9 footage. I should mention that the clipboard setting for adjusting between different aspect ratios is said to be fixes in Bogart V3.

Chet

thanks very much, Chet, for your added perpective on this issue. I've had some success when using older, rich archival 4:3 travel/historical videos with my 16:9 DV material by having a "preface" at the beginning of my film explaining to an audience this reality and encouraging them to view it as an "historical piece", or "art film", etc. From your remarks I think I should wait on starting a new major project until Bogart3 arrives - hopefully very soon. thanks, again Gordon (Gorldon is a typo I decided to leave as unique)

similar issue, Lou, and different. Earlier you woke me up to change my dvd player from 4:3 to 16:9 on my PLAYBACK player. This issue was that I couldn't get my supplement dvd film to record in 16:9 so that it'd fill the screen on playback. Solution came to me - probably bc of your earlier advise - that I must also change the dvd player to 16:9 from 4:3 that was playing the supplement dvd film and being recorded. Then, of course, it filled the screen on playback. Thanks for your interest! Gordon
