Casablanca Avio Question

Post by bleonard »

Can you add an external DVD writer to this unit? If so, what software would be needed to burn finalized videos to DVD? Thank you in advance for the information.

If you are meaning connecting a stand alone USB or SATA DVD writer, the answer is no.

Back in 2002 I did this the homemade way using an internal OEM IDE Pioneer burner inserted into an external sled and routing the IDE and power connections into the Avio and adding the Arabesk software.

I actually added multiple hard drives as well routing out to a switcher and external enclosures.

Worked great and was especially handy as back in the beginning you had an twenty gig hard drive limitation.

IDE has pretty much gone the way of the dodo bird so you would have to add a IDE to SATA conversion cable and good luck finding a compatible Pioneer version as I believe the last compatible model was the 118 which hasn't been made for a couple of years now.

I have added (IDE) DVD burners externally to Avio's and Krons.

However these days, as Tim says, it is difficult to find the burners - although there is an IDE LG one that is useable with the latest Smart Edit versions and newest Arabesk.

The main problem is the cost of Arabesk as your machine doesn't have it.
Couple that with the burner and fitting costs and you might as well try and find a second hand Avio that already has these fitted.

Just my 2c.

Re: Casablanca Avio Question

Thank you for your quick response to my question regarding the Casablanca Avio. I haven't been using it for editing in a very long time as I have gone to my laptop and have various video editing software programs that I am fairly happy with. Does this unit have any monetary value left in it? I have several software programs installed on it and it does a great job but I don't like that I can't burn videos direct to DVD on it. I am thinking of selling it - if I can get a reasonable amount of money. I bought it brand new and it has not had that many hours on it. Any advice on value at this point, would be greatly appreciated. I have noticed that some people on this forum were selling for around $500.00. Is this about what the value would be?

Unfortunately, no.

Obviously your unit pre-dates the AvioDVD and even that unit is severely outdated and underpowered for anything, but tape based SD footage.

I imagine your unit only has a twenty GB hard drive in it?

If you saw an Avio without a built in DVD going for $500 it was probably fully loaded with all available software and still frankly, someone overpaid for it.

There is very little market for a unit that old and in my opinion, if you get someone interested in buying it for even a couple of hundred you will be very lucky.

Sorry, but a PC that old would be pretty much of little market worth either.
