There was a question from a customer on the Cassie Tips List Serve this weekend - asking why we selected DVI instead of HDMI for monitoring the HD signal on our new products - I know some members here may have that same question... here is a the answer directly from Macrosystem DE CEO Jörg Sprave:
Most monitors these days have HDMI - why would Macrosystem use DVI?
Are there any sync issues due to running a separate audio out of the s-4000 to the monitor, and using DVI for video?
Here are some of the reasons that made us using DVI instead of HDMI:
- DVI is much more solid, with real screws fixing the cable in place, HDMI is a cheap consumer grade connector
- Most of our customers are not using the built-on monitor speakers of the TV set, but more professional audio amp/speaker combinations instead
- HDMI-TVs have external audio in for the HDMI anyway, for those who want to use the built in speakers
- HDMI is very costly (royalties), DVI is free
- There is the painful issue of the HDCP copy protection on the HDMI, which often creates compatibility issues between the unit and the TV set
All in all, DVI is robust, inexpensive, compatible, and free of copy protection complications.
And there are no known sync issues!

Seriously, I am using the DVI port out to HDMI with my S4P.

HDMI>carries both HD/SD video and audio uncompressed. Pure signal.
DVI>Carries just the video above...uncompressed
Both are the same quality.
The "S"4000 PRO and series have HQ audio output via rca cables to the monitor.
Do not confuse the above with firewire.
Lastly, I use a HDMI switcher to go back and forth between my "S"4K and my editing player/recorders. The HDMI is connected to the DVI port via an adapter. BTW: The SD signal via DVI is superb...to say the least.

So Chris you got a cable of ____ ft and Tim you got an adapter, is that what your saying? I hope mine comes with the adapter because I'll have to run the cable about 12ft.

I did not actually use it as I had a DVI to HDMI six foot cable already that I used, but the adapter that came in the S4P box was a three inch or so DVI to HDMI adapter cable if I remember right.

Thanks Tim, I pick up my Pro tomorrow so I'll see what I get then. Then the fun starts, have to decide what to save and what to toss on 10 drives to the Pro. Gonna be hard to sleep tonight.
